Diabetes and forbidden foods: what to remember!
If there's one disease that's getting bigger and bigger, it's diabetes. In fact, this chronic disease can affect everyone, children and adults alike. Until now, there is no cure for diabetes. However, its symptoms can be reduced and its complications can be prevented. One way to do this is to take care of your diet. Indeed, if you have diabetes, it is better to avoid certain foods. Do you want to help a loved one with diabetes feel better? Or simply want to take charge of your health in order to prevent the possible complications of your diabetes? This article is for you. You will find everything you need to know about diabetes and forbidden foods.
Understanding Diabetes
It is important to better understand what diabetes is before taking stock of foods to avoid when you have diabetes. As mentioned above, diabetes is a chronic disease that cannot be cured. It is caused by a lack of insulin or a problem with the body's use of insulin. Note that this hormone is produced by the pancreas. Its role is to allow glucose to enter all the cells so that they can use it as a source of energy.
So when a person lacks insulin, the cells cannot use glucose as fuel and the glucose stays in the bloodstream. This causes hyperglycemia, the first sign of diabetes. Over time, this increase in blood sugar leads to complications for the person with diabetes. These complications mainly affect the health of the eyes, nerves, heart, kidneys and blood vessels. Also, it should be noted that there are several types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes.
Foods forbidden for diabetics
Being a diabetic means paying attention to your diet. Indeed, the adage that we are what we eat has never been truer. The diet of the person with diabetes can have a significant impact on his or her health. He or she must choose a good diet to avoid complicating the situation. Whatever the type of diabetes, the foods to be excluded from the diet remain the same.
Dairy products
Even though people with diabetes can eat dairy products, some are not recommended as they may be harmful to the patient's health. Thus, when it comes to diabetes and prohibited foods, know that you should avoid Greek yogurt, sweetened yogurt, dessert creams, white cheeses with a fat content higher than 40%. You should also avoid cheeses made of double or even triple cream such as mascarpone for example. In fact, the animal fats contained in this type of cheese and dairy products are not beneficial for diabetics.
Vegetables
When it comes to a diet for diabetics, you immediately think of vegetables. However, be aware that some of them, when cooked in a certain way, are not suitable for diabetics. So if you have diabetes, it's best to avoid commercially prepared vegetables. Vegetables in sauce and fried vegetables are also not recommended.
Meat, eggs and fish
In case of diabetes, it is strongly recommended to turn to lean meats. Thus, the following products are to be banned from all your dishes:
- Lamb and mutton
- Breaded meats, even if it is poultry meat
- Fish sticks
- The nuggets
- Meat and other products of animal origin that have been processed. This is for example the case of all cold meats (sausage, mortadella, pâté, sausages, ...)
- All the meats we fried
- Dishes containing meat in sauce
The fruits
In the case of diabetes, fruit in syrup and dried fruit should be avoided.
Starchy foods
The diabetic person must also pay attention to his consumption of starchy foods. For example, they should avoid, as much as possible, rice pudding, French fries, potato chips, all commercially available ready meals, pastries, cakes and cookies, breakfast cereals and mashed potatoes.
Processed and high-fat foods
Taking a packet of chips and a few boxes of cakes can be tempting when shopping at the supermarket. However, these processed and highly processed foods are not beneficial to the health of diabetics. It is therefore better to avoid them so as not to have to deal with complications.
Drinks
Finally, as far as drinks are concerned, people with diabetes should avoid all soft drinks. Alcohol and other sweetened beverages (such as fruit juices) should also be avoided. It should be recognized that "light" soft drinks are available on the market. However, they can still have an effect on raising blood sugar levels. Instead, it is advisable to opt for natural fruit and drink plain water.
By avoiding these foods and eating your three meals at regular times each day, you can stabilize your blood glucose levels and prevent the complications of diabetes.
